Now that springtime is here, it’s time to get outdoors and pay homage to Mother Nature’s handiwork. Blooming orchards, bright swaths of field mustard and splashes of roadside poppies signal the crescendo of wildflower season, which is building to a peak now and should continue into mid or late April on the coast and in the Central Valley, depending on the weather. Now that the sun’s out and the days are getting longer, it’s time to witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet that’s taking place right now, just west of you. Every March entire herds of gray whales can be spotted from shore as they migrate northward along the coast, completing the last leg of their 14,000-mile annual round-trip-one of the longest mammal migrations known. The proud parents are heading back to their Arctic feeding grounds after giving birth to their calves in the warm waters of Baja California (yes, even baby whales are adorable). It’s the kind of spiritually uplifting getaway that makes you realize that, as Northern Californians, we’re very lucky to be living in one of the most incredibly diverse regions on earth.
