Local Getaways - Great Getaways - Wonderful Wine

When you mention the Wine Country most people think of Napa or Sonoma Valley. But true wine geeks have long known that some of Northern California’s best wine and wine-tasting experiences can be found well beyond the valleys, often at family owned wineries tucked away on one-lane roads that would be impossible to find if it weren’t for the periodic signs pointing you in the right direction. It’s experiences like these—casual yet captivating conversations with winemakers as you savor the fruits of their years of hard work—that make visiting these esoteric wineries worth the effort. Here are a few of my “Who knew?” favorites. Read full article »

Tipping in card rooms: A good idea?

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - Tipping in a Card RoomAfter meals at fancy (or even not-so-fancy) restaurants, none of us thinks twice about leaving tip for deserving server. Strangely, however, many casino guests have trouble tipping dealers and servers when they play cards.

Tipping these folks is not mandatory; there’s no law that says we gamblers must fork over extra cash for good service. Still, considering that in many cases, dealers (and food servers, for that matter) earn 30 to 40 percent of their annual salary in tips, spreading a little love every now and then is expected, and a dip in gratuities means a hit to the money these people need to live.

Customary tips in a card room or casino vary depending on the person whom you’re tipping. Read full article »

Local Getaways - Great Getaways - Adventures by the Sea

Last weekend I headed down to Monterey with my girlfriend to check out The Secret Lives of Seahorses exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (a must-see, but more on that later). The beautiful drive along Highway 1 got me thinking about all the wonderful things there are to see and do along the Northern California coast, particularly in the late summer when the fog tends to stay offshore and the weather is sunny and warm. So this week’s theme covers some of my favorite adventures by the sea, most of which are an easy day trip from the Bay Area. Read full article »

Player’s clubs: Is this a fast-ticket to free stuff?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - Players ClubsBy now, almost all Northern California card rooms and casinos have what they call “player’s clubs.”

The clubs all have funny names and take themselves far more seriously than they probably should. Members get cards and are encouraged to swipe them every time they arrive at the casino or sit down for a new gambling experience. Behind the scenes, the cards sync up with software that charts play and doles out rewards based upon customer loyalty.

Most of these rewards come in the form of special deals: 50 percent off a hotel, or a buy-one-get-one-free promotion in the on-site restaurant. Sometimes, however, the rewards are actually some pretty worthwhile free stuff. Read full article »

Harrah’s Lake Tahoe

Understatement is not a word that crosses your mind at Harrah’s, the most luxurious and glitzy of Tahoe’s casinos. Harrah’s takes great pride in its special blend of luxury, beauty, unparalleled guest service, and casino entertainment. Large rooms have two bathrooms, each with a TV and telephone, with those thick, fluffy, white towels Sinatra always demanded. Most have bay windows overlooking the lake or

Weddings and parties can be scheduled aboard the private yacht, the Tahoe Star. The newly renovated South Shore Room hosts showbiz stars, and last, but by no means least, the casino is a gambler’s dream. P.O. Box 8, Stateline, NV 89449. 800/427-7247 or 775/588-6611. Local Getaways - Great Getaways - Thrills and Adventure

Summer’s almost over, but there’s still time to plan one last getaway to the great outdoors. But instead of sitting on your fanny in a camp chair all weekend (not that there’s anything wrong with that), consider taking a thrilling and adventurous weekend getaway that gets your blood flowing and calories burning. As a serious outdoors nut I could write a book on Northern California’s recreational getaways, but for this week’s theme I’ve narrowed it down to my seven top picks for having some serious outdoor fun. Casinos vs. Card Rooms: What’s the Difference?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - Casinos vs CardroomsThey sound alike, look alike and even in some cases feel the same, but California’s casinos and card rooms are two vastly different beasts.

Casinos are larger. They almost always have slot machines. They also exist exclusively on Native-American land. But perhaps the biggest differentiator is what happens when you lose your bet: in casinos, the money goes to the house; in card rooms, it goes to another player. Read full article »

The Missions That Made California

Local Getaways - Great Getaways - The Missions That Made California

If you consider yourself a Californian then you owe it to yourself to discover the roots of your identity, and ground zero on this journey are the historical Spanish missions of California. The original chain of 21 missions stretched from Baja California to Sonoma Valley, and all were situated a day’s travel apart on horseback along El Camino Real, or “The Royal Road.” Today you can retrace this historic route far more leisurely with a cruise along Highway 101 while visiting five of my favorite missions, as well as some of the finest towns and cities on the coast. It’s a great excuse to pack an overnight bag and spend a couple of days on a historical (and possibly spiritual) journey filled with fascinating factoids and stories of our past. Read full article »
