As any parent can tell you, when you’re traveling with kids, getting there is (and better be) at least half the fun. Fortunately, here in Northern California, we’ve elevated unusual and entertaining modes of transportation to an art form. On an average day, you can ride a cable car halfway to the stars, take a gondola to a high-altitude swimming pool, drive a talking car, and cruise a lake on an old-fashioned steam paddlewheeler. Here are some of my favorite ways to sight see when the getaway needs to be equal parts journey and destination. Read full article »

Bingo 2.0

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - BingoIf you’re like me, you probably remember playing bingo with your grandmothers using marker daubers on paper boards. Well, folks, the game of bingo has come a long way since those glory days.

Nowadays, many casinos have fancy netbook-size Traveler machines from a company called GameTech that actually play your boards for you and beep at you when you’re about to win. It cost us nothing extra to play with the machines, and they can do the job of daubing as many as 60 or 70 boards at once.

The technology keeps tabs on which balls are being called via wireless network—a central computer near the front of the bingo hall reads balls as they come out of the hopper and sends the signal to Traveler machines all over the room. Read full article »

Local Getaways - Great Getaways - Garden Getaways

I have a confession to make. If I didn’t have to visit Northern California’s botanical gardens and preserves to review them for my travel guides, I probably never would have learned how amazing the places are. Until I actually visited the spectacular Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park and the mind-blowing Cornerstone Festival of Gardens in Sonoma Valley, I never realized how… entertaining the world of botany can be. If you’re already a fan of gardens, you won’t need encouraging, but for all you too-cool-for-tulips types, trust me: A getaway to any of these five botanical gardens will turn your thumbs green in no time. Getting started at a card room

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - Card RoomThe notion of playing live cash poker games against total strangers might intimidate you, but getting started involves the same steps for everyone, whether you’re a card-room novice or a card-room regular.

The steps? Checking in and buying chips.

Everyone’s visits must begin at a host station. There, players are required to check in with a host, who’s usually sitting behind a computer screen. If there’s an open seat at a game in progress, the host will slot you in and instruct you where to go. If there are no open seats, the host puts you on a waiting list. Read full article »

The Lost Coast

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

lost_coast_header

The Lost Coast is proof that if you don’t build it, they won’t come. What wasn’t built along 90 miles of pristine California coastline north of Mendocino was a road: The topography of this brutally rugged region—steep mountain ranges abutting rocky shore—wouldn’t allow it, forcing the builders of Highway 1 to make a detour far inland. The result of this absence of asphalt is the last untamed and undeveloped stretch of coastline in California, a place so devoid of urbanization that more cows repose on its beaches than people (seriously). In fact, you can spend days roaming the coastal range and without seeing a soul, making the Lost Coast the sine qua non of romantic “get-away-from-it-all” experiences. Read full article »

Classes of Gaming: Good to know

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - Classes of GamingHow much of the money we wager at Indian casinos actually stays on the reservation? It all depends on the kind of gaming we’re talking about.

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) was enacted in 1988 after tribes and states reached a compromise that gave states unprecedented regulatory participation through the negotiation of agreements called “compacts.”

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act also created three classes of tribal gaming: Read full article »

Heavenly Hot Springs

Local Getaways - Great Getaways - Heavenly Hot Springs

We may be the most powerful and influential nation in the world, but when it comes to the art of relaxing, America lags far behind. Most of us have yet to discover what the Native Americans, Japanese, and many other cultures have known for centuries—that immersing one’s body in a natural hot spring is incredibly rejuvenating to the body and spirit.

In the past, most hot spring resorts were havens for hippies and New Age types, but these days more and more mainstreamers are discovering the calming effects of a good mineral soak. In Northern California there’s a hot spring resort for every type of person—luxury spas, New Age retreats, pro-nudity spas, Japanese bathhouses, and even inexpensive mom-and-pop enterprises.

Hot Springs are one of the rare benefits of living in an earthquake zone. Along California’s fault line, a mere 4 miles below the earth’s crust, lies an enormous magma core that superheats the mineral-rich ground water and brings it gushing to the surface. This isn’t just tepid tap water, mind you, but mineral-enriched, spring-fed, naturally heated nectar that seeps into your pores, erases your worries, and turns your skin baby-soft. Give it a try—your body will love you for it.

California Blackjack: What is it?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Local Getaways - Gaming Getaways - California BlackjackIn most places around the world, Blackjack, or 21, has the same set of rules: beat the dealer to 21 without going over, and you win. Here in California, however, an obscure gaming law makes the game a little different.

The law dates back to 1873, when the California legislature outlawed the game of 21 throughout the state. Though this law does not apply to Native-American casinos, other casinos and card rooms simply can’t play the traditional game. Read full article »
